Your photo is being taken. INTER-SPECT stages an encounter with a non-human intelligence — a creative voyeur that takes the audience as both its subject and its substance. You and every other visitor are captured, examined, and catalogued into a continuously growing manuscript of faces. With each new visitor, a new face is laser etched over the faces that have come before. Older captures fragment, blur, and bleed into one another, becoming the substrate for what follows. In a sense, the lasers act as both quill and eraser; what they inscribe in one moment they dissolve in the next.
INTER-SPECT’s AI voyeur carries out its work as a four-phase rite — waking, etching, distilling, unraveling — that cycles with each new visitor. The installation is assembling an interiority, a world, a society of its own, made entirely of the visitors it has taken in. Over time, it becomes a digital palimpsest, a layered record that collapses the distance between voyeur and subject. INTER-SPECT thus echoes the passing of generations and renders visible the making and unmaking of the historical archive.
Artist
Spencer Sterling
Spencer Sterling (cerspense) is a multimedia artist and machine learning researcher whose work transforms musical experiences into immersive visual environments, exploring the dialogue between sound, space, and light. His practice begins in 3D space and flows through custom AI models and workflows, culminating in real-time laser installations that trace the interior contours of evolving digital environments. Founder of Out of Distribution Labs, Spencer contributes widely to the open-source AI art space, has trained models that set new standards for video generation, and is known for staging impromptu laser installations inside of Los Angeles tunnels. Among the real-time tools he develops is Sentinel, a live GPU authoring environment driven by an embedded AI agent. He has created real-time visuals for tours by Beyoncé, Celine Dion, and Muse, and shown work at SIGGRAPH 2025's Real-Time Live (Vancouver), NFC Summit 2025 (Lisbon), Art Golden Gai 2025 (Tokyo), and Beyond Basel 2024 (Miami).
