Ring explores how light and form are symbiotic. While light is what makes perception of the solid form of the ring possible, the acrylic’s optical qualities – its transmission, dispersion, and refraction of light – allow viewers to perceive the laser beams as a sunburst of color. As the light traces the ring, internal microscopic imperfections in the acrylic manifest as textural peculiarities in the beam’s reflection. The circular movement of the light and the spinning of the ring evoke the continuity between imperfection and perfection with the passage of time.

Artist

Aka Chang

Aka Chang is a new media artist from Taiwan recognized for his exploration of light, materiality and spatial experiences. Chang began his career as a VJ (or video jockey) combining his background in fashion and motion graphics to create stunning visual backdrops for musicians.

The artist’s current practice applies a minimalist and reductive understanding to his work with the awareness that all visual spectacles can be reduced to a few simple sources of light. This deconstructive thinking highlights the connection between visual spectacles used in entertainment with natural phenomena observed in the fundamental sciences.
